About
THE AUTHOR (last updated August 19, 2010)
Welcome to the busy fun life I share with my husband and young son. We live in the beautiful gulf island community of Gabriola, British Columbia, Canada.
We own and operate a busy hair salon and spa, so between raising our son, gardening, riding our bikes, and participating in community events, we stay very active.
Please take time to explore all the topics on this blog. Originally it started as 4 topical blogs: Me & My PCOS, Me & My Obesity, one public and one private Organique Gal blog. The summer of 2009 I embarked on a rigorous intense healing treatment plan with my Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor, and slowly all of the things I am interested in melded into one quest – an organic natural life.
ORGANIC CREATIVITY
I grew up without TV, and was 23 years old when I watched my very first movie. Instead, I spent many happy hours of my childhood reading. My love for reading evolved into a tendency to spin stories in my head as I stood at the sink doing dishes, or sorted laundry for our family of seven.
I always kept a journal, but they were so private and full of teen angst that I often destroyed them as soon as they were full. Now I desperately wish I had kept them because they would be excellent fodder for humorous tales. I have always found writing to be incredibly therapeutic, and I particularly love blogging because it’s such a great platform for getting your thoughts and ideas out into the wild wide world. The comments don’t hurt either.
I am also writing my memoirs which will eventually be self-published on blurb.com when they are completed.
ORGANIC LIFESTYLE
One day in early 2005 I woke up and realized everything about my life was toxic – my relationships, my diet, my body, my mind, my spirituality. I made the decision to change. This blog is the story of how I am transitioning from Toxic Gal to Organique Gal.
We are now leasing a beautiful gulf island home that overlooks the False Narrows passage between Gabriola and Mudge Island, with a view of the Vancouver Island mountains beyond. Most evenings you will find us sitting on the deck intermittently reading and enjoying the view of the ocean, or star gazing with a telescope when the sun sets.
We are also on a quest to eliminate toxins from our environment and lessen our family’s carbon footprint. We have discovered a real passion for growing our own food in recent years, and the main method we have used with huge success is Lasagna Gardening. Stay tuned for more posts about our garden in progress, yummy organic whole food recipes, as well as the positive eco-friendly changes we are effecting for our family.
ORGANIC WELLNESS
Our family loves living green, and we are doing everything we can to overcome our health challenges. These include allergies (seasonal hay fever, food allergies), infertility (Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome aka PCOS, low sperm count/mobility), inflammation (costrochondritis, weak SI joint, plantar fasciitis, and degenerative spine), and for me personally, morbid obesity. On August 11, 2009 our whole family started a healing cleanse regime under the care of a Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor, and this blog details the ups and downs of this major undertaking as we heal our bodies and I lose weight naturally.
A huge part of our wellness includes spirituality. We follow an Organic Faith – back to the basics, stripping away all the traditions and rituals of organized religion. I can sum it up best this way:
36“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Source: Matthew 22)
